Interview with Charles E. Butler

Charles E. Butler

When did you first decide you wanted to write?
I love to write and enjoy writing short movies. I have had some played at film festivals across the world, but no luck in getting noticed as yet. But I enjoy making them.
What is your favorite genre to write?
I write all kinds of genre. I don’t believe that books should be pigeon-holed in that respect. Although they are all too often. My short kindle book, Detections in a Scarlet Vein defies genre typecasting.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I like reading all kinds of genre. But the horror genre is the one that began it all. I think the first book I picked up was HG Well’s War of the Worlds when I was around 8 years old.
Do you have a favorite author?
My biggest influences were Stephen King, James Herbert, Richard Stark, Stephen Laws, Kim Newman. Literally too many to mention.
Is there something you want to write about, that you haven’t yet?
There are a lot of things I want to write about. In that respect, I am just getting started.
What is one silly fact about you?
There are so many. I’m scared of the dark.
Do you have a favorite character you have written so far?
The Private Detective in Detections in a Scarlet vein
Is your writing influenced by people in your life?

Influenced more by the language rather than people. I love characters, but I love the prose of good writing and I’m not going to admit if I fall short in reflecting that.
Anything advice that you can give to the aspiring authors out there??

Yes. Do the work, ie: write the book and enjoy doing it. then be prepared to DO the work, ie: publicizing and getting it OUT THERE. With regards to writing it, first and foremost, write for yourself. If you enjoy it, chances are that others will too. Don’t build scenarios for your characters, let the characters come to life on their own.

Here is information about the books that Charles E. Butler has written and how to contact him.

There are two books that I’ve written The Romance of Dracula is a non-fiction book cataloging and reviewing the major film adaptations of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. This can be obtained here: and here
It is also available on kindle.
The second book is a small adventure, fiction, called Detections in a Scarlet Vein. A very eclectic mix of soliloquy and meandering dialogue. Very funny by all accounts and at twenty eight pages, a very quick read. it is only available on Amazon kindle as it is too small for paperback publication.
I am also writing three more film review books, The Hammer Vampire, Werewolf; the Children of the Moon and Vampires Everywhere; the rise of the Movie Undead. I have the beginnings of two novels on my wattpad site.
For an insight into my Dracula ramblings visit the eerie digest online magazine at this link.  where I discuss three of the most important movie Counts. Lee, Langella and Oldman.
Recently I wrote an article for Diabolique Magazine entitled Casting Shadows, giving a run down of Stoker’s character on film.
