Interview with Raine Thomas!

Raine Thomas

Brief author bio: Raine Thomas is the author of a popular series of YA fantasy romance novels about the Estilorian plane, including the Daughters of Saraqael trilogy and the Firstborn trilogy. She is a proud member of Romance Writers of America and is a contributing blogger to The Writer’s Voice. When she isn’t planning weddings, writing or glued to social networking sites, she can usually be found on one of Florida’s beautiful beaches with her husband and daughter or crossing the border to visit with her Canadian friends and relatives.

When did you first decide you wanted to write?

The first time I remember being really excited about writing was in the fourth grade, when our teacher challenged each of us to write something. My story, The Dancing Spider, earned an honorable mention at the county’s literacy fair. After that, I was hooked!

Did you get nervous the first time you put your work out there?

Honestly, no. My bachelor’s degree is in English with a focus in Creative Writing. Our assignments largely consisted of writing stories that were then critiqued by our peers and professors. That helped me learn how to hone my work and accept criticism. When I published the Daughters of Saraqael trilogy, I was too excited to be nervous!

Do you prefer fame or fortune?

Definitely fortune. I’m not a “being in the spotlight” kind of gal. I’d sure love to have money to travel, though!

What is your favorite genre to write?

Young adult. So far, my books have been YA fantasy/romance, and I’ve really enjoyed living on the Estilorian plane. After my sixth book, Elder, is released at the end of this year, my next book will be the first in a YA cyberpunk thriller series. I can’t wait to dive into it!

What is your favorite genre to read?

Romance. Although I love to read many different genres, the books that tend to sink their teeth into me and make me neglect things like laundry, dirty dishes and sleep are romance.

Do you have a favorite author?

Yes…Nora Roberts. I’ll read anything she writes. If I ever meet her, I’ll go total fan-girl.

Is there something you want to write about, that you haven’t yet?

My next series will be an entirely new venture for me. It features a male protagonist and will be set in the future. The primary plot will be a mystery/thriller, something that I’ve always wanted to write but haven’t done yet.

What is one silly fact about you?

I met my husband of almost eleven years at Mardi Gras. Those who know me would acknowledge that this is absolutely the least likely place for me to travel, never mind fall in love. But life is funny that way!

Do you have a favorite character you have written so far?

So far, my favorite character to write has been Zachariah, who first appears in my book Defy. He’s very different from most of my other characters…reserved, antisocial, cranky, stubborn. In short, he embodies traits that many people might label flaws, but he has ended up being one of the most loved characters in my series.

Does that reflect anyone you know?

Are you more scared of spiders or snakes?

Neither. My nemesis? Cockroaches. Especially flying palmetto bugs.

Favorite Candy?

I have to pick just one?  I’ll go with Twix.

Spaghetti or Lasagna and why?

Spaghetti, because I’m a pretty lousy cook, but I can make a great plate of spaghetti. It makes me feel like Mom of the Year to serve it to my family.

Anything you want to say the aspiring writers reading the blog??

Never, ever give up. Publishing options for writers have never been better. Work on your writing at least a little bit every day.  You’ll see progress before you know it!

Ancient gods, avenging angels and other beings of myth and legend all have one thing in common: they exist. They’re called Estilorians. Amber Hopkins is one of them…well, half of one, anyway. If only she knew it.

Begin the journey with the Daughters of Saraqael as they fight to save an entire race of beings.
