 The Interview

What inspired your new release?

I started to write a blog post on wine for my blog SAZ in the Cellar (http://sazinthecellar.com/), but it was too long, even for a 5-part blog post and I decided the topic was worth an entire book, which is now about 360 pages long.

Tell us about any WIPs you have

After Wine Sense, I am releasing a book on authoring aps and processes and also writing a screenplay on the McCarthy era.

How many people ask you to read their books?

Quite a few have, but I am becoming more selective as there are a lot of authors who only want to be ‘validated,’ and are not serious about improving the quality of their writing.  I am willing to provide a several hours to several days effort helping someone if I think they will truly accept the feedback and benefit from it.

In a word sum up your writing style

I write non-fiction and try to educate others via storytelling, so we can learn from each other’s experiences.

Do you have a character you enjoyed writing the most?

Since I write non-fiction, the character I like the most is the reader!

Is there a genre you would like to try?

The screenplay I mentioned and ‘dark’ troubled short stories that tempt human nature.

Could you live without coffee?

Probably, but why would I want to?!?

Tell us one of your favorite jokes

I love grammar jokes and math jokes. But my favorite joke is not appropriate for public consumption!

What’s your favorite thing about the writing process?

I like the original outlining of structure and flow.  I like to mind map ideas.

Three facts about you

(1)    American living in Australia

(2)    Learned to write late in adult life

(3)    Performed strip-tease during university basketball games when I used to lead the pep band!

Do you believe in UFOs?

No, but I have limited imagination which is why I write non-fiction.

What was your favorite snack growing up?

Potato chips

Would you rather have fame or fortune?

Neither, I would prefer to have influence and the ability to continue to create good content.

Pick one book that is your all-time favorite?

East of Eden by John Steinbeck

Embarrassing guilty pleasure –

Ice cream sundaes with caramel and chocolate topping , or 50 year-old Port wine

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

Introvert.  I am extreme INTP according to Meyer-Briggs!

Favorites:

Muppet -  (do not know as I have never watched them!)

Cartoon growing up- (never watched cartoons either!)

Color- Yellow

Type of Monster- I do not like monsters!

Do you speed when you drive?  Yes, if I know I can get away with it!

Spaghetti or Lasagna and why?  Spaghetti as it is easier to chew and digest.

Your thoughts on Self Publishing

I have debated back and forth and decided the self-publishing route was best in terms of getting to market. I am fascinated by all of the technology involved and self-publishing process.  If successful, I also believe it provides the best commercial model, even though it is tough for a ‘newbie,’ who does not have all the skills.  Self-publishing has truly taught me my strengths and weaknesses and where I need a team to help.  I use a hybrid approach now called ‘assisted publishing’ where the author keeps control , yet has access to specific assistance when needed.  I have created a company called InkIT Publishing (http://www.inkitpub.com/) and am developing that to help myself get the right model and then to assist other authors.

Your thoughts on Zombies

I never think about zombies.  The paranormal genre of writing is not my cup of tea!

Do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster?

I am intrigued that there is a possibility it could exist.

Are you a tweeter, a re-tweeter, or you couldn’t care less about Twitter?

I tweet and re-tweet, but find Twitter to be so much noise and very little effectiveness.  I find Facebook to be far more effective and am still the biggest fan of building an email list and using direct email.

Would you rather sit on a porch with sweet tea {insert other beverage if tea isn’t your thing} or go hiking with a bottle of water and a smile?

I would rather sit on a porch, even though I know I should be hiking!  In both case, I loved being able to take in the surrounding nature.

Your favorite type of music

Popular music of the late ‘60s and the ‘70s plus Jazz.

Your favorite color of Skittle

Never eat Skittles, so do not know!

Your favorite memory

Too illicit to share, but it was illicit!

Your favorite quote

“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”  By CS Lewis

Your favorite way to spend an evening

I love to help my wife cook a meal and then sit down to enjoy it with a good wine.

Tell us what you are working on now!

Finalizing my images for Wine Sense and figuring out the best way to distribute the eBooks that have been pre-ordered.

Anything you would like to say to the aspiring authors reading this blog?

Have the confidence to continue to write and to self-publish; invest in yourself and the skills needed, including writing, editing, layout and design, marketing and get help where needed.
